Lanterns and Lyrics : A Family Class to Create and Carol

LanternLanterns and Lyrics : A Family Class to Create and Carol (One Day to MAKE and One Day to Sing)

Family MAKE Day options:

Session 1:  Sunday, December 17, 2017   12:30 – 2:30p

Family Caroling Night:  Wednesday, December 20, 2017  6:30 – 8p (or as you need to leave)

$25 (per Lantern)

This season marks the time of the Winter Solstice, when the sun has its shortest daily run time, leaving us with the most darkness we see all year.  It also marks a special time dedicated to spending quality time with those you love and spreading cheer all around.  I developed this new class in an effort to give each of us an opportunity to celebrate all of these and to bring back a long lost community tradition together!

This class has two parts:  On Sunday, December 17, there will be two available sessions of time for your family to choose from to come together and make colorful tissue paper-mache lanterns, which you will carry with you as you carol the following Wednesday night.  You can sign up as a family to make one lantern together or you can each make your own, the choice is yours.  The more lanterns we carry that night the more beautiful it will be though!  After you have made your lanterns you will leave them to dry. Then, on Wednesday, December 20, at 6:30p, your family will return to the studio, pick up your lanterns (which will be ready and wired for you), grab a quick snack, and join a wonderful local musician or two who will lead us through the surrounding neighborhood lighting up the night with our artwork and using holiday songs and our own voices to spread love and cheer to our neighbors, just like in the days of ‘ol!

Hoping your family will join mine for this MAKEshop… (not thinking my singing voice alone would spread much delight to anyone! Ha!)

Also, if you are finding it hard to sign up PleaSe contact me and I will try to move things around or add.  Would love for everyone to participate that wants to!

2017 brought many adventures, interests, changes, and achievements to each of our lives.  In the development of our children, the growth is often so rapid that these events and memories can be fleeting. I would venture to guess that we all have longed to freeze time to relish in these sweet stages of our children a bit longer before bolting on ahead.  I developed this new class for Januarys in an effort to help us all;)…

As a new addition to the MiniMAKEr Series, this class allows your child time to reflect on events he/she experienced during the past year (ie, a family vacation, a new sport/hobby, a big birthday, an epic obsession, etc…) and then select a favorite to capture in a simple Pop-Art styled painting, on a small 6 x 6in deep edge canvas.  Once the painting is finished, I will lead your child through a short little interview about the chosen memory in an effort to both decide on a descriptive sentence he/she will write along the edges of the canvas, as well as to create a brief summary which I will write on the back.  We will end this class with a slice of ‘POPped right out of the toaster’  toast to ‘toast’ to our new years ahead!

Whether you choose to begin a collection of these paintings as your child grows that you add to and display together within your home, or you choose to give precedence to a single special moment in your child’s life, each piece will be a visual time capsule of a fleeting moment which will be easily recalled and loved for many years to come.

Class will be held in my studio located at 2435 S. Peoria Ave. (located in the upstairs of the Carriage House directly behind the Tulsa Garden Center). Hope to see you soon!

The Story Ornament : A Class For Grown-Up MAKErs

Family Ornament Class 2The Story Ornament : A Class For Grown-Up MAKErs

Session 1:  Wednesday, December 13, 2017,  6 – 9p  **SOLD OUT (contact me if still interested just in case I might be able to add)

Ages: Grown-Ups (who are kids at heart!)

My mom loves to gift ornaments.   She gives them often to celebrate a couple’s wedding or baby’s arrival.  Growing up, she always gave me an ornament for Christmas that had something to do with my year: a Snow White dress for the year she took me to DisneyWorld, an OU letter jacket for the year I started college, a bride and groom for the year I got married, etc. I love these treasures so much and look forward to pulling them out every year and recalling each story as we hang them on the tree.

When I got married I began giving my own symbolic ornaments to my husband each year representing things such as our honeymoon and our new home.  When my daughter came along, I knew that I wanted to start the ornament collection for her, as well, so I started hand-stitching funky little felt and fabric ornaments that showcase something that she began, achieved, or did that year.  These are in no way perfectly executed by any stretch of the imagination, as I am not a traditional seamstress or designer, but they are symbolic and full of love, and a gift from me to her, and that’s all that really matters to me.

This year, I wanted to offer a little class in case anyone wants to join me in making a meaningful ornament for yourself or to give someone special in your own life.  During the evening, I will begin by showing some examples and a variety of materials you can choose from, and then be available to offer any design and implementation help (and plenty of encouragement) to get you started on your own creations! There will be an additional little holiday side-project for you to make, as well, to offer you a break from stitching;)

This will be the first time I have ever offered a class to grown-ups so it will be an adventure… Especially since its BYOB!

Depending on interest, this class will be offered either in my studio (located in the Carriage House directly behind the Tulsa Garden center at 2435 s. Peoria ave) or in a larger room in The Tulsa Garden Center.  I will supply some small snacks and water but you are encouraged to BYOB and anything else you might like.

Class sign-up can be found below.  If you are interested in a private party class instead, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss.

Hope to see you there, but if not, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family the happiest of holidays yet to be had! xo

Years ago, when I first met my stepmother, Maryann, I discovered that she collected nativities.  This discovery has made giving her gifts so much fun over the years as I love to make or find unique additions for her collection, some of which have included a dried orange peel nativity, a thumbprint nativity, and a light-up Pinhole Box Diorama Nativity I made in college.  She appreciates each bizarre addition as much as the next, which is really cool.  This class is dedicated to her.

Inspired by the miniature creations the famous sculptor Alexander Calder made for his suitcase wielding ‘Cirque Calder’, we will spend our holiday workshop learning about this wonderful artist and his magical circus, and use his creative inspiration to manipulate similar bits of Calder’s wire, wood, paper, clay and cloth, among other materials, to form our very own little whimsical nativities,… (and give you a few precious hours to get some errands checked off your to-do list)!

At the end of class we will stage a little personal nativity photo shoot to send you a photo from, which your family can use for spreading additional holiday cheer to loved ones near and far!

Class will be held in my studio at 2435 S. Peoria (located in the upstairs of the Carriage House directly behind the Tulsa Garden Center).  Please send a snack and drink with your child.

Class sign-up can be found below.  Please contact me with any questions or if you are finding it a struggle to sign up, as I will do my best to help troubleshoot or add sessions if need be.  I hope to see you there, but if not, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family the most happy of holidays yet to be had!

July 25 – 29, M-F

9am – Noon

Ages 5 – 12

$200 **

* This Class is Currently Sold Out… please contact me here to get on waitlist or in case i can add a second class!

This is a camp where we will artistically celebrate individuality, acceptance, creativity and Fashion Ch-ch-ch-changes!

After ‘Space Oddity’ put him into the lives of countless music-lovers, David Bowie creatively reinvented himself several years later as an alternate stage persona, Ziggy Stardust – an unparalleled, glam rock, fashion icon.

Over the course of this week of camp, we will be inspired to develop our own fictional stage persona storylines, develop individual fashion statements through artwork, and even work toward creating our own Ziggy Stardust-inspired frocks (of course the make-up and all!) to be worn at the end-of-week ‘Let’s Dance!’ Party and Fashion Show’! And all of this while listening to and learning some classic Bowie tunes! Going to be Suuuuuuuper Fun!

** This camp will require a glittery/metallic base layer of clothing to build off of. I have found some metallic leotard/unitard suits (that are totally wonderful) on Amazon for about $25, which I will happily order for your child ahead of time and can be reimbursed for on the first day of class – OR, you can absolutely bring your own to class! Just beware that whatever you bring will be cut, sewn onto, and transformed into something completely outrageous so do not send along any precious heirlooms;)! Write me with any questions or requests for order in the notes when you sign up.

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

Use the Paypal Button below to sign up. A 50% transferable, but non-refundable, deposit is due to reserve your space, and the remainder is due the first day of class. When you sign up, if you either experience difficulty with the PayPal Button due to error or maximum enrollment, please contact me at annie@annieferris.com. I will be keeping a Wait List for each class so please email me your specifics!

Look forward to seeing you this summer!

On July 11, 1969, David Bowie first descended upon the widespread Earthly radio waves with his single ‘Space Oddity’, sharing with the world the contagiously wonderful fictional space journey of Major Tom. Just over a week later, the world watched the very real Neil Armstrong’s space journey as he made history and stepped foot onto the moon. Armstrong and Bowie would both seal their fate in history that month, as well as a lasting connection with the fascination of the Space Age and cosmic exploration.

During this week of camp, (which happens to be the 47th anniversary of The Moon Landing and one which includes a Full Moon!), we will be setting off on our own artistically intergalactic exploration into the worlds of some of Bowie’s space-fueled masterpieces: Space Oddity, Life On Mars, etc…, as well as to pave our own creative approaches to both the artist himself as well as the galaxies far beyond! This class will include an assortment of art projects and mediums to make any creative little astronaut happy, as well as a soundtrack to make our travels much more epic!

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

The Amazing Spiderwoman, Louise Bourgeois: A Celebration of the Family Web

The Amazing Spiderwoman, Louise Bourgeois: A Celebration of the Family Web

July 11 – 15, M – F

Session 1:    9 – Noon  ** This session is currently full.

Session 2:    1 – 4pm

Ages 6 – 12 **

$200

This will be a beautiful week studying the artist nicknamed ‘Spiderwoman’, Louise Bourgeois. Bourgeois was a French-American painter, sculptor, printmaker and fiber artist. She is widely known for her massive bronze sculpture of a spider, entitled ‘Maman’, which is now a part of the permanent collection upon entry into Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. At over 30 feet high, it is difficult to miss!

Bourgeois’ family was very important to her work over the years. ‘Maman’ itself was beautifully sculpted to represent her mother, Josephine, a weaver by trade, and certainly her best friend and protector, most of which can be represented in the characteristics of a spider. Toward the end of her life, she began to explore her roots and her childhood as a daughter of parents who owned a tapestry-repair business. Bourgeois spent her childhood helping her mother sew and weave. In late adulthood, Bourgeois began to sew beautiful cloth books visually representing memories of her family. The cloth pages can be seen in a photo above, pieced apart for an exhibit at the MOMA.

Over the course of this week, we will be exploring the artistic life of this lovely artist and celebrating our own relationships with our families through the creation of our own fabric book, a bit of weaving, and the construction of our own ‘Maman’-inspired spider sculptures!

This class encourages students to bring some items of clothing or scraps of fabric which represent special people in their family, which we will be re-purposing within our work.

** This class is definitely heavy on hand-sewing and the relaxation that comes along with the creation of reflection-based, hand-sewn pieces. A week-long sewing circle with sculpting breaks if you will;) To ensure your child’s success, please consider his or her preferences for activities such as these. Email me anytime if you have questions, I would be happy to try and answer!

The Sweet Life of Andy Warhol and Wayne Thiebaud

June 20 – 24, M – F

9am – Noon

Ages 5 – 12

$200

This Class is Currently Sold Out.

During this delicious week, we will explore and gather inspiration from the delightful early Warhol lithographs of scrumptious desserts and the heavenly, impasto paintings of Wayne Theibaud’s cakes, pies and ice creams, to create our own sweets-inspired artwork on paper and canvas!

As the word ‘impasto’ aptly means ‘dough’ or ‘mixture’, this certainly describes what we will use our impasto techniques to create throughout the week! To allow us to get the absolute best inspiration possible, we will spend Tuesday’s class time on-site in the Brady District, sketching the baked goodies on the shelves of Glacier Confection (and maybe even leave with some samples)!

The class will end on Friday with a sweet little dessert potluck art show!

Also, a little heads up that several days of class may end with ‘parent-pre-approved’ frozen treats to keep us cool in the June heat… no starving artists this week!

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!
