The StoryMAKEr Project…(phase 1)

I am currently in the works of updating the website to include my newest creative venture to launch, The StoryMAKEr Project!
Though the webpage and official launch is scheduled to be up and running in a couple of months, some of you have already heard about the project and contacted me to sign your families up early for this custom side-by-side art experience, which is wonderful!
Because of this, I decided to write this post just for you ‘early-birds’, so you can directly contact me if you are interested in signing up for this experience!
Please click here to send me an email and put ‘StoryMAKEr’ in the subject line and we will set up a time to chat!

Thanks! And, I look forward to meeting you!

The Art of David Bowie, Side B: ‘Ziggy Stardust’…

July 25 – 29, M-F

9am – Noon

Ages 5 – 12

$200 **

* This Class is Currently Sold Out… please contact me here to get on waitlist or in case i can add a second class!

This is a camp where we will artistically celebrate individuality, acceptance, creativity and Fashion Ch-ch-ch-changes!

After ‘Space Oddity’ put him into the lives of countless music-lovers, David Bowie creatively reinvented himself several years later as an alternate stage persona, Ziggy Stardust – an unparalleled, glam rock, fashion icon.

Over the course of this week of camp, we will be inspired to develop our own fictional stage persona storylines, develop individual fashion statements through artwork, and even work toward creating our own Ziggy Stardust-inspired frocks (of course the make-up and all!) to be worn at the end-of-week ‘Let’s Dance!’ Party and Fashion Show’! And all of this while listening to and learning some classic Bowie tunes! Going to be Suuuuuuuper Fun!

** This camp will require a glittery/metallic base layer of clothing to build off of. I have found some metallic leotard/unitard suits (that are totally wonderful) on Amazon for about $25, which I will happily order for your child ahead of time and can be reimbursed for on the first day of class – OR, you can absolutely bring your own to class! Just beware that whatever you bring will be cut, sewn onto, and transformed into something completely outrageous so do not send along any precious heirlooms;)! Write me with any questions or requests for order in the notes when you sign up.

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

Use the Paypal Button below to sign up. A 50% transferable, but non-refundable, deposit is due to reserve your space, and the remainder is due the first day of class. When you sign up, if you either experience difficulty with the PayPal Button due to error or maximum enrollment, please contact me at annie@annieferris.com. I will be keeping a Wait List for each class so please email me your specifics!

Look forward to seeing you this summer!

The Art of David Bowie, Side A: Space Oddity…

On July 11, 1969, David Bowie first descended upon the widespread Earthly radio waves with his single ‘Space Oddity’, sharing with the world the contagiously wonderful fictional space journey of Major Tom. Just over a week later, the world watched the very real Neil Armstrong’s space journey as he made history and stepped foot onto the moon. Armstrong and Bowie would both seal their fate in history that month, as well as a lasting connection with the fascination of the Space Age and cosmic exploration.

During this week of camp, (which happens to be the 47th anniversary of The Moon Landing and one which includes a Full Moon!), we will be setting off on our own artistically intergalactic exploration into the worlds of some of Bowie’s space-fueled masterpieces: Space Oddity, Life On Mars, etc…, as well as to pave our own creative approaches to both the artist himself as well as the galaxies far beyond! This class will include an assortment of art projects and mediums to make any creative little astronaut happy, as well as a soundtrack to make our travels much more epic!

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

Commencing countdown (and I hope to see you this summer!), Ten, Nine, Eight…

The Amazing Spiderwoman, Louise Bourgeois: A Celebration of the Family Web

The Amazing Spiderwoman, Louise Bourgeois: A Celebration of the Family Web

July 11 – 15, M – F

Session 1:    9 – Noon  ** This session is currently full.

Session 2:    1 – 4pm

Ages 6 – 12 **

$200

This will be a beautiful week studying the artist nicknamed ‘Spiderwoman’, Louise Bourgeois. Bourgeois was a French-American painter, sculptor, printmaker and fiber artist. She is widely known for her massive bronze sculpture of a spider, entitled ‘Maman’, which is now a part of the permanent collection upon entry into Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. At over 30 feet high, it is difficult to miss!

Bourgeois’ family was very important to her work over the years. ‘Maman’ itself was beautifully sculpted to represent her mother, Josephine, a weaver by trade, and certainly her best friend and protector, most of which can be represented in the characteristics of a spider. Toward the end of her life, she began to explore her roots and her childhood as a daughter of parents who owned a tapestry-repair business. Bourgeois spent her childhood helping her mother sew and weave. In late adulthood, Bourgeois began to sew beautiful cloth books visually representing memories of her family. The cloth pages can be seen in a photo above, pieced apart for an exhibit at the MOMA.

Over the course of this week, we will be exploring the artistic life of this lovely artist and celebrating our own relationships with our families through the creation of our own fabric book, a bit of weaving, and the construction of our own ‘Maman’-inspired spider sculptures!

This class encourages students to bring some items of clothing or scraps of fabric which represent special people in their family, which we will be re-purposing within our work.

** This class is definitely heavy on hand-sewing and the relaxation that comes along with the creation of reflection-based, hand-sewn pieces. A week-long sewing circle with sculpting breaks if you will;) To ensure your child’s success, please consider his or her preferences for activities such as these. Email me anytime if you have questions, I would be happy to try and answer!

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

The Sweet Life with Andy Warhol and Wayne Thiebaud… New Class!!

The Sweet Life of Andy Warhol and Wayne Thiebaud

June 20 – 24, M – F

9am – Noon

Ages 5 – 12

$200

This Class is Currently Sold Out.

During this delicious week, we will explore and gather inspiration from the delightful early Warhol lithographs of scrumptious desserts and the heavenly, impasto paintings of Wayne Theibaud’s cakes, pies and ice creams, to create our own sweets-inspired artwork on paper and canvas!

As the word ‘impasto’ aptly means ‘dough’ or ‘mixture’, this certainly describes what we will use our impasto techniques to create throughout the week! To allow us to get the absolute best inspiration possible, we will spend Tuesday’s class time on-site in the Brady District, sketching the baked goodies on the shelves of Glacier Confection (and maybe even leave with some samples)!

The class will end on Friday with a sweet little dessert potluck art show!

Also, a little heads up that several days of class may end with ‘parent-pre-approved’ frozen treats to keep us cool in the June heat… no starving artists this week!

Note: If your child is younger than the recommended age for class but you feel strongly he or she would be successful, I would completely be open to discussing! Just contact me and we’ll see what we can do!

Collaborative Full-Day Ballet/Art Camp: Firebird

On Location at Jasinski Dance Academy: 3315 E. 33rd St., by Schusterman-Benson Library

June 13 – 17, M – F

9a – 4:30p

Ages 6 – 9

$325

For all aspiring ballerinas, dancers, yogis, artists, authors, event planners, producers, directors, or general visionaries alike!

First of all, let me say that I am so looking forward to this opportunity to teach the visual arts side of a dance production! I have actually been primed for this for several years now with the nightly ‘performances’ that my daughter, Bea, treats my husband and I to, so I am thrilled that I now have a chance to rise from my seat in the audience and assist the little dancers behind the scenes in creating a magical and memorable experience to compliment their ballet steps!

This is an All-Day Camp Experience with an end-of-week performance. Your sweet ballerina will spend the morning hours in the dance studio with Ms. Lyn Jasinski, a renowned dancer, instructor, and the Owner and Creative Director of the Academy, and her wonderful team, learning the story and lovely choreography behind the Russian ballet, Firebird. They will then have lunch and some contemporary ballet and yoga time and then come to me in a separate on-site studio in the afternoon to explore the visual creation side of a performance, including set design, playbill/ticket development, prop design, and a bit of costuming. Each ballerina will leave from the week with the tools and props to enable many repeat performances in your family’s future!

In 1945, Russian-born artist Marc Chagall debuted beautiful set designs and costumes he had made for the New York City Ballet’s performance of Stravinsky’s Russian Fairytale Ballet, Firebird. It was exquisite! The photo seen above was the ballet curtain! During this week of camp I will introduce the ballerinas to Chagall, his own Firebird designs along with some Russian imagery, and then each dancer will spend the week using bits of that inspiration to create their own work.

This will be a sweet little week of the whole production process!

To enroll you can click on this link to go to the Jasinski Academy website where you will get your ballerina all signed up!

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Set in Poland, this is a comic ballet telling the story of a toymaker and a life-size mechanical doll that he creates and which comes to life, named Coppelia. This ballet was one of the early predecessors for other ballets involving dolls that come to life such as The Nutcracker. During this week of camp I will introduce the ballerinas to some French and Polish imagery, brainstorm ideas for the visual representation of the toyshop, and then each dancer will spend the week using bits of that inspiration to create their own work.

This will be a sweet little week of the whole production process!

We love our mothers and mothers love their children… and (nearly) everything they create! This Mother’s Day, give the mothers in your life a gift that will become even more treasured with each passing year!

I am offering eight, single day art classes where children will be helped to reflect upon some special qualities that they love about their mothers which will help them create a Mary Cassatt-inspired portrait of the two of them, representing the unique relationship they share, on an 11 x 14in. deep-edge canvas.

Once they finish, I will keep the painting, finish and seal the piece, and artfully add the child’s words and stories about their mother, which inspired the work, making this a colorful keepsake that every mother will swoon over! Pick up for all art will be Friday, May 6 from 4 – 6p, and Saturday, May 7 from 10a – noon. Artwork comes wrapped in slightly see-through parchment paper and tied with red-and-white bakery twine, so make sure to bring a bag along with you wish to hide it until the big day!

Sign your child up soon though as spaces are limited and demand is high for these!

Private sessions may be possible for younger kiddos!

Classes are held at my studio located in the upstairs of the Carriage House Gallery, located directly behind the Tulsa Garden Center at 2435 S. Peoria.

Last year, after being advised that Dad’s wanted in on the action, I scheduled a couple of sessions for those lucky fathers for Father’s Day, too! They were a great success, so they are back this year!

This will be the exact same model for class as the Mother’s Day version, just focused on the special moments with Dads. And if they are anything like the ones from last year… these memories are worth documenting! Dads do some pretty cool things with their kiddos according to those paintings!

The artwork from all sessions will be available for pick-up on Saturday, June 18th from 10am – Noon. If those hours do not work for your family, an alternate time may be arranged.

Private sessions may be arranged for younger kiddos.

Classes are held at my studio located in the upstairs of the Carriage House Gallery, located directly behind the Tulsa Garden Center at 2435 S. Peoria.

Just as last year I heard about the Dads wanting in on the goods, now its the Grandparents! Grandparent’s Day is officially on September 11th, 2016 and thinking about it, I completely agree that they not only should have a class, but they TOTALLY deserve it! So this one’s for those sweet quilting-, newspaper reading-style of grandparents, or the fire-wielding-, metalsmithing-, marathon-, and mountain-climbing kind alike… You’ve earned it!

This will be the exact same model for class as the Mother’s/Father’s Day version, just focused on the special moments with Grandparents. Both grandparents can be represented in one canvas with a shared memory in this class. If you would like an individual one for each, email me and we will arrange for a separate piece to be made for the additional cost.
